Valter Mantelli, born in Genoa, Italy, has been working at IPLOM S.p.A., an oil refinery located in Northern Italy, since 1995. From 2012 to the present, he has served as the Technical Director. In this role, he supervises the Engineering department, Research and Development for new investments, provides technical assistance to process plants and off-site facilities, oversees Automation, Energy Management, and ensures compliance with the European Directive ETS (Emission Trading System). He is actively involved in energy transition and sustainability initiatives, including the production of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil from waste materials and the installation of district heating in the town of Busalla using waste heat from the refinery. Additionally, he is responsible for coordinating research projects at the European, Italian, and Regional levels.

From 2009 to 2012, he served as the IPLOM Project Manager Coordinator for the AUTOIL2 project. This project involved revamping refinery production to produce high-value products and comply with new European Directives. It included the installation of various process units, a Combined Heat and Power generation system, and refinery utilities.

Between 1998 and 2009, he held the position of Operations Manager at IPLOM, where he was responsible for the refinery’s production operations. During this period, he oversaw the installation of a CO₂ recovery plant from steam reforming, which included CO₂ compression, liquefaction, and storage.

From 1995 to 1998, he worked as a Process Manager, where he was responsible for installing new process plants aimed at upgrading the IPLOM refinery to meet new environmental regulations.

Prior to joining IPLOM, Valter Mantelli worked at PROMETHEUS, an engineering company, from 1989 to 1995 as a Process Engineer. His responsibilities included process design for refinery plants such as atmospheric and vacuum distillation, HDS, and thermal cracking. He was also involved in detailed engineering follow-up, commissioning, and start-up. Additionally, he contributed to strategic planning through the development of simulation models (LP) to optimize refinery production and evaluate new investments.

From 1986 to 1989, he was employed by ANSALDO COMPONENTI, another engineering firm. There, he worked as a researcher focused on developing new monitoring systems for steam turbines and provided troubleshooting services for ANSALDO turbo generators.

Valter Mantelli completed his higher education at the University of Genoa, graduating with full marks in Electrical Engineering between 1981 and 1986. He also attended the Bocconi School of Management (SDA, Milan, Italy) in 1999.
